Despite the name, the Australian Shepherd took shape on ranches in the American West in the 1800s, from Spanish and Basque herding dogs crossed with collie types that arrived with sheep shipped from Australia. Medium-sized at roughly 40 to 65 pounds, Aussies have a weather-resistant double coat in merle, black or red, often with white and copper trim, and eyes that can be blue, brown, amber or a mix.
They're intelligent, loyal and happiest with a job to do. Many bond tightly with family and stay reserved with strangers, and without daily exercise and mental work that drive can turn into herding children, chewing or barking. In Richmond, that means pairing river trails with training sessions at home, and being ready for a heavy seasonal shed. They suit active adopters who enjoy training.
