Siberian Huskies descend from sled dogs kept by the Chukchi people of northeastern Siberia and arrived in Alaska in the early 1900s for racing. They're medium-sized, usually 35 to 60 pounds, with a thick double coat, erect ears and eyes that can be brown, blue or one of each. The breed became famous through the 1925 serum run to Nome.
Most Huskies are friendly, playful and happy to greet strangers, which makes them companions rather than watchdogs. They were bred to run in teams and think for themselves, so they roam, howl and dig if given the chance. In Johnson City, that means planning for daily exercise on the area's trails, a secure yard or leashed outings, and two heavy shedding seasons a year. Each Husky differs, so judge the dog in front of you.
