Australian Kelpies were developed in the 1870s from Scottish working collies to move Merino sheep across vast, hot Australian stations. They're lean, medium-sized dogs, usually 25 to 45 pounds, with prick ears, a fox-like head and a short, weather-resisting double coat in black, red, blue or tan. Show Kelpies follow a written standard, while Working Kelpies are bred purely for ability.
Kelpies are alert, quick to learn and devoted to their people, though many stay reserved with strangers. The same drive that makes them brilliant workers can lead to heel-nipping, chasing bikes or inventing destructive projects when bored. In Sioux Falls, their tough coat and stamina suit the prairie climate, but every Kelpie varies, and the best matches enjoy running, training and dog sports.
