American Staffordshire Terriers descend from bull-and-terrier dogs that came to the United States from Britain in the mid-1800s, and the American Kennel Club recognized them in 1936. They're medium, muscular dogs, usually 40 to 70 pounds, with a broad head, pronounced cheeks, a short glossy coat in nearly any color and a tapering tail.
AmStaffs are often confident, affectionate and eager to stay close to their people, though each dog differs. Their strength makes leash manners important, and some are selective with other dogs even when well socialized. In Sioux Falls that means choosing dog park visits carefully. The short coat is low-maintenance, but it offers little insulation against a South Dakota winter.
