The Redbone Coonhound is a lean, long-legged hound with a short, smooth, solid-red coat, dark eyes and long ears that give it a pleading look. The breed descends from red foxhounds brought to Georgia by Scottish immigrants and was developed to trail raccoons by scent at night and hold them in trees. The United Kennel Club recognized it in 1902, and the AKC followed in 2009.
Many Redbones are friendly, even-tempered and affectionate at home, then turn single-minded when a scent turns up. In Dayton, that means leashed walks, secure fencing and a plan for a voice that carries. Dogs vary, so a Redbone's own energy, sociability and habits matter more than any breed description.
