The Australian Kelpie was developed in the 1870s from Scottish working collies to move Merino sheep across hot, open Australian stations. The result is a lean, medium-sized dog with prick ears, a short weather-resistant double coat and stamina that seems to have no bottom. Colors run from black and tan to red, blue and cream.
Kelpies are still uncommon in the US, so many people meet them as sport and ranch dogs. In Kansas City, the best match is usually an active adopter who wants a running partner and a training project. Without enough work, a Kelpie may herd children, chase bikes or bark at every passing car, and dogs vary a lot, especially between working and show lines.
