German Shepherd Dogs came out of Germany around 1900, when Max von Stephanitz worked to turn regional herding dogs into one capable working breed. The result is a long-bodied, athletic dog with erect ears, a bushy tail and a dense double coat, usually black and tan, black and red, sable or solid black. Adults typically weigh 50 to 90 pounds.
Many Shepherds are loyal, quick learners and naturally watchful, which is why they turn up so often in police and assistance work. That drive means most want a job and steady time with their people, whether that's a morning trail walk or an evening training session. Some are reserved with strangers, and puppies need careful socialization, so a calm, confident adult can be a very good match.
