The American Eskimo Dog has no ties to Arctic sled dogs. It descends from white German Spitz dogs that immigrants brought to the United States in the early 1900s, and the name changed amid anti-German sentiment around World War I. Eskies later became circus performers, and that showy intelligence is still part of their charm. They come in toy, miniature and standard sizes, from roughly 6 to 35 pounds.
Eskies are alert, affectionate with family and often reserved with strangers. Their dense double coat sheds heavily, with a bigger blowout once or twice a year, and tear staining is common. In Ocala, plan on regular brushing, shade and indoor time in the warm months, and daily mental work such as trick training or puzzle toys. Dogs vary, so a dog's own personality matters more than the breed description.
