About Rocco
This could be the start of something paw-some. Meet Rocco! This special, complicated little guy is around 4 years old, weighs less than 15 pounds, and appears to be a fluffy mix between a schnauzer and a cairn terrier. While he might bark and put on a tough front at first, once he forms a bond, he reveals his lovable and happy side—especially enjoying walks and car rides alongside his favorite people. Rocco appreciates his independence, preferring to dine solo, and he’s searching for a calm adult home that lets him approach for attention on his own terms. He was never socialized with other dogs and tends to react defensively, trying to scare them away before they can approach him. Rocco has a complex medical history. He was never taken to a vet by his previous owners and experienced a severe back injury that temporarily left him paralyzed. With rest, he was able to mostly recover from this likely disc injury, though he remains a bit ataxic and wobbly in his hind legs. He does best walking on grass or soft surfaces with good traction, and it’s important that he is not allowed to jump on or off furniture or use stairs, to reduce the risk of re-injury. Rocco also has a history of intermittent gastrointestinal issues and was diagnosed with IBD after specialized testing; he is currently well-managed with a strict prescription diet and medication. Rocco may not be the easiest companion, but for those willing to invest time and patience, the rewarding bond with a quirky soul like his is truly meaningful. If you could be the special person he needs, consider applying to meet him at Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge. Every animal deserves a happy ending. This one starts with you.
