Pugs began as companions at the Chinese imperial court and reached Europe with Dutch traders in the 1500s, later winning over the House of Orange and Queen Victoria. The modern Pug is square and sturdy, usually 14 to 18 pounds, with a round head, deep wrinkles, big dark eyes and a tail curled over the hip, typically in fawn or black.
Pugs are often playful, affectionate and happiest near their people, which fits Long Beach apartment and bungalow life. The flat face is the main care issue: it limits breathing in heat and during hard exercise, and extra weight makes it worse. Expect heavy shedding, regular skin-fold cleaning and attention to the eyes. Lifespan estimates run from about 11 to 15 years, and Pugs and Pug mixes vary in size and health.
