The Chow Chow is an ancient spitz-type breed from northern China, once used for hunting, guarding and pulling. It's a square, heavy-boned dog, usually 45 to 70 pounds, with a lion-like ruff, a scowling expression and a blue-black tongue. The coat comes rough or smooth, and both are double coats that shed heavily.
Chows tend to be dignified, independent and devoted to a small circle of people, and they're often reserved with strangers. Many are quiet and clean indoors, but they rarely crave constant attention and dislike rough handling. Early socialization, calm training and regular brushing go a long way. In Long Beach, where the mild coast makes year-round walks easy, the main job is keeping that thick coat comfortable through the warmer months. Every Chow is different, so judge the dog in front of you.
