The American Curl began with Shulamith, a longhaired black stray with backward-curling ears who turned up at a home in Lakewood, California, in 1981. Her kittens inherited the curl, a dominant trait, and the breed earned championship status with TICA and the CFA in the 1990s. Curls are medium-sized cats, usually 5 to 10 pounds, with longhaired or shorthaired coats in every color and pattern.
Many Curls are people-oriented, playful and curious, and they often stay kittenish well into adulthood. The silky coat needs only light grooming, while the firm ear cartilage calls for gentle handling, never bending or forcing the ears. Curls are fairly uncommon, so in Nashville you may also meet curl-eared mixes whose looks and personalities vary from cat to cat.
