The Egyptian Mau is a medium-sized, muscular cat and the only naturally spotted domestic breed. Its coat comes in silver, bronze or smoke, with a scarab-like M on the forehead, dark mascara lines beside the eyes and gooseberry green eyes. Long hind legs and a loose flank skin flap give it a sprinting stride. Most weigh 7 to 14 pounds.
Many Maus are devoted to their own people and cautious with strangers, with soft, chirpy voices. They love high perches and interactive play, which fits an indoor life in a desert city. The short coat sheds low to moderately, so weekly combing is plenty. The breed is uncommon, so a spotted cat labeled Mau may be a domestic shorthair, and each cat's own personality counts for more than the label.
