The American Shorthair descends from European working cats that traveled to North America on ships to keep rodents out of cargo, then guarded barns and farmhouses. The breed was formalized in the early twentieth century and renamed in the mid-1960s. It's a solid, muscular, medium-to-large cat, usually 6 to 15 pounds, with a broad face, full cheeks and a dense, hard-textured short coat in dozens of colors. The silver tabby is the classic look.
Many American Shorthairs are easygoing, quiet and affectionate without being clingy, and they love hunting-style play. They also tend to gain weight, so measured meals matter. Most shorthaired shelter cats in Newark are random-bred domestic shorthairs with a similar look, so adopters may meet cats with the same traits under either name, though every cat's personality varies.
