A calico cat has white fur with patches of orange and black, or gray and cream in the dilute version. Because the color genes ride on the X chromosome, nearly all calicos are female. Most adoptable ones are domestic shorthairs weighing about 6 to 12 pounds, and cats like these commonly live 12 to 18 years, though some are longhaired mixes with fluffier coats.
Personality comes from upbringing, age and temperament, not from the patches, so expect anything from a quiet lap cat to a chatty explorer. Shedding is moderate, and a weekly brush keeps loose hair off the couch, which matters in a small SF flat. Spending time with a cat before you commit tells you far more than her coat ever will.
