About Dirt

MEET DIRT! Hi there! I know my name "Dirt" seems weird to some, but its meaning is really simple. I was named after "Joe Dirt," but over time, "Joe" was dropped. It happens when you're living in a home with 16+ others. I'm a 1-year-old, solid 14-pound Chiweenie (Chihuahua/Dachshund) with the most handsomest red coat, some pretty magnificent ears & I'm very photogenic! I'm vaccinated, heartworm negative, neutered, microchipped & on heartworm prevention. Yes, I lived in a home with a LOT of us. Although we weren't walked on leashes or introduced to new people & places to build our confidence, we knew kindness & love. Our most favoritest place to be is next to you on the couch, ON your lap or snuggled up at bedtime. Foster Mom was told I'm high-energy & playful, but so far, I've been a chill kinda dude. Fast as Speed McQueen, but chill. Granted, I'm still new here & most of my time has been spent wearing a cone! I'm also discovering the joys of having a good chew. Here's where YOU come in. Will you help me become a more confident Adventure Buddy? My housetraining is coming along, but with so many of us here, more one-on-one time would really help. Foster Mom plays the "check your pants" game. Clean pants? Treat! Potty in the yard? Treat & a "good potty!" Wait patiently while she puts everyone's pants back on? Another treat. Consistency is key! I'll also need help with leash training. I'm getting comfortable having a leash attached, but the big world outside is still a little scary. I could be a flight risk while learning, so a securely fenced yard is required while I build confidence, learn leash skills & bond with my person. You & I working together on this - oh, the bond we'll have! I'd be okay with another fun pup who doesn't mind me occasionally trying to be in charge when things get too zany. With so many dogs in one yard, that's kinda how we handled things. It's a learned behavior, and I'm figuring out new boundaries. A calmer home and someone willing to gently redirect me will help. And as much as I LOVE being with my person, I also need to learn that it's okay when we're not glued together. A little independence, socialization, enrichment & new adventures (at my pace!) will help me become a more confident guy. Cats? Dunno! We don't have any test kitties here. Kids? Older, respectful ones would be lovely. Elementary-aged kids could work, too, as long as YOU make sure I'm respected. No lying on me or pulling my ears or tail, please! I'm a pretty amazing little love sponge who's ready to learn what life can be like with a person of my very own. Adoption Requirements: Applicants must live within 150 miles of Jacksonville, FL. All pets in the home must be spayed/neutered, current on vaccinations & receiving consistent heartworm prevention.
