About Rusty
Rusty stands out for more than his striking red longhaired coat. He’s a 7-year-old purebred dachshund who’s learned to guard his boundaries closely. At 18 pounds, he carries both dignity and damage—brilliant with adults and other dogs who respect space, but deeply unsettled by certain touches or approaches. His history includes bite incidents, always tied to feeling threatened or unwell, so any adopter must approach with patience and realistic expectations. Rusty cannot be in homes with children under 18, and anyone interested must accept that he’ll need dedicated behavioral support, extra decompression time, and ongoing management. He’s house trained, crate trained, and currently working on leash manners in his Maryland foster home. Rusty delights in toys, car rides, and walks, warming up to humans with time and always on his terms. Affection happens, but only when he invites it—he may seek a nap in the big bed or invite you to put on his harness if adventure awaits. He’ll thrive with someone invested in seeing the real Rusty and letting him bloom slowly. Ready to fall in love? Hit apply and lets get started.
