Dude is a male Shiba Inu with a medium build and a medium-length coat, currently living in Toms River, NJ. At around 8-9 years old, he is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and house trained. He has made significant progress in foster care and is looking for a quiet home where he can continue to blossom.

About Dude

Dude spent his early years as a mill dog and came to rescue terrified of nearly everything—noises, unfamiliar movements, even the wind. Since arriving at Shiba Rescue of New Jersey, he's made real progress with the help of his steadfast foster mom, Jackie. He still moves cautiously through new environments and finds comfort in safe hiding spots, but with patience, Dude seeks out laps and enjoys being brushed. On walks, if something spooks him, he'll pause and wait for reassurance. Dude travels calmly in the car and likes to sleep on a dog bed or even under a table if he needs to recharge. He’s around 8-9 years old, neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and heartworm negative, and recently had a dental. Dude is housebroken, not at all destructive, and can stay alone for up to 7 hours during the day and 10 at night. Foster mom recommends a quiet home, ideally without young children, and he may appreciate a friendly older dog as a companion. He enjoys a run in the yard, but really, he just needs a calm place to feel safe and learn to trust at his own pace. Give them the home they have been waiting for. Apply today.

Questions about Dude

  • What type of living environment is this breed usually best suited for?

Dude is a Shiba Inu, a breed that thrives best in calm, stable environments. They do well in homes where routines are consistent and noise levels are moderate, making them suitable for both houses and apartments with steady companionship.

  • How much outdoor space does this breed typically need?

Shiba Inus like Dude appreciate a secure yard or an area to stretch their legs, but can adapt to apartment living as long as they get daily walks and mental stimulation. Supervised outdoor time with space to run is a bonus.

  • Is this breed typically suitable for homes with children?

Dude’s breed generally prefers quieter homes and can be wary around young kids. Older, respectful children may be fine, but Dude himself is best suited for a home without young children based on his temperament and background.
