At 8 years old and 82 pounds, this gentle soul has finally left behind the hard life he survived on the streets of Texas and is now searching for the forever home he has always deserved through Fetching Tails Foundation. For months, Alf wandered a neighborhood as a stray, known by many people who saw him every day and stopped to pet him because of his sweet and friendly nature. Despite being loved by the community, no one was able to truly help him until someone finally stepped in and contacted a rescue. By then, it was clear Alf had endured far more than any dog should. He arrived undernourished, with severely worn teeth likely from years of chewing on bricks or other hard surfaces just to survive. He also suffered a chemical burn on his tongue, most likely from desperately searching for food or water while living outside. Thankfully, his tongue is healing, and now Alf is finally learning what safety, comfort, and love feel like. Even after everything he has been through, Alf absolutely adores people. His favorite thing in the world is simply being near his humans, watching them, following them around, and soaking up affection. He has a very low energy level and would much rather relax beside you than spend his day running around. Once Alf came into a home, he made it very clear he no longer wanted the outdoor life. He is happiest curled up inside where he feels safe and loved. Alf is dog friendly and currently lives peacefully with another dog in his foster home. He doesn’t really engage in rough play and seems happiest simply coexisting with other dogs. He is also potty trained with no accidents and has proven himself trustworthy with free roam of the house when left alone. While he does best when someone is nearby and can seem a little lost when alone, he is very calm and simply lays down quietly until his people return. He is good with children, though because of his age and everything he has endured, Alf would thrive best in a calmer home with older kids where he can finally enjoy some peace and quiet. Wooden floors can still make him nervous, and since home life is so new to him, patience and understanding will be important as he continues learning. He is also still figuring out how to walk on a leash and does not know commands yet, so a home with a fenced yard would likely help him feel more comfortable and secure. Alf’s story is heartbreaking, but his future does not have to be. Beneath the scars of his past is a loving, grateful dog who wants nothing more than to belong to someone forever. He has survived enough hardship for one lifetime.
