AvailableAbout Oreo Hanging Out
Meet Oreo Oreo was one of the dogs brought to our March JPAWS adoption event, and while several dogs found homes that day, Oreo and Cooper were the only two left behind. The thing is, nobody could understand why. He was so well behaved at the event. Volunteers absolutely loved him. He happily hung out with the other dogs, chewed on his No-Hide bone, played with his toys, and honestly acted like he had been preparing for adoption events his whole life. He was sweet, social, goofy, and easy to be around. As we learned more about his history, though, we realized Oreo has spent much of his young life being bounced around. Oreo originally came into the shelter as a puppy. He was adopted. Returned. Adopted again. Returned again. He has unfortunately become what shelter staff call a “boomerang dog.” And honestly? It makes us sad. People rush to adopt puppies because they are tiny and adorable, but puppies grow up quickly. They need patience, consistency, structure, and commitment. Somewhere along the way, Oreo missed out on the stability he deserved. While he was being returned, another family that may have truly committed to him as a puppy never got the chance to find him. But despite all of that, Oreo is still an awesome dog. At just 10 months old, he is still very much a puppy with a playful spirit and so much love to give. We knew we wanted to help set him up for success, so when Angela, a longtime volunteer, dog trainer, and owner of Puppy Love, offered to help, we jumped on the opportunity. Angela said that if we could get Oreo into a foster situation for a couple weeks after leaving the shelter environment, he could join the fun at daycare and work on settling into a more normal routine. Oreo has now been there for over a week, and when we checked in to see how he was doing, Angela’s response made us smile. “He’s doing great. He loves it. He loves to play. He’s good with the other dogs. He’s one of those dogs where no news is good news.” That says a lot. Sometimes the best dogs are the ones who quietly fit in, make friends easily, and simply want to be included. If you would like to meet Oreo, you can reach out to Angela to schedule a meet and greet. You will still need to complete an adoption application, which can either be brought with you to the meet and greet or emailed to Martha, our volunteer dog adoption coordinator. Oreo has already had a few people give up on him. We would really love for the next chapter of his life to finally be the forever one. Contact our volunteer dog adoption coordinator, Martha, at cajunlassie78@att.net to schedule a time to meet this wonderful happy girl. Adoption fee includes vaccines, spay/neuter surgery, microchip and a heartworm test. Any dog that tests positive for heartworms can be treated through our Fix-A-Heart Program. Adopter has to buy a year supply of heartworm prevention before treatment begins. Please note: this application is view-only in Dropbox and must be downloaded to your device to be completed. You may fill it out using a PDF editing program or print it and complete it by hand. https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/ahiajf6e6i0ox2hdl09jk/JSPCA-Application_2.0-Newest-Updates.pdf?rlkey=be9he1julh02etikl021k9plk&dl=0 All adoptions subject to approval.
