AvailableAbout Itachi
Itachi is a classic red Shiba Inu with a huge personality and a surprisingly soft heart underneath all of the drama and opinions. Born January 4, 2022, this neutered male Shiba is affectionate, vocal, expressive, and deeply bonded to his people once he feels comfortable. He is one of those dogs that talks to you constantly, announces his feelings about everything, and somehow manages to be both ridiculous and endearing at the same time. He is not an aggressive dog toward people. In fact, his owner describes him as extremely loving and gentle with humans, including children. But Itachi is also very much a Shiba. He is intelligent, emotionally sensitive, occasionally possessive about food or toys, and can be cautious or overstimulated during introductions with new people or unfamiliar dogs. He does not need harsh correction. He needs calm leadership, proper management, and people who understand the difference between a difficult dog and an intelligent one. Itachi at a Glance Breed: Shiba Inu Gender: Male, neutered Date of Birth: January 4, 2022 Color: Red Location: Florida Status: Pending Rescue Intake Personality Itachi is the more vocal and expressive of the two dogs. His owner says he “talks” constantly and can be barky when excited, overstimulated, wanting attention, wanting food, or hearing noises around the home. He especially tends to vocalize heavily during introductions or meet-and-greets, particularly with men, though his owner notes this appears rooted more in nervous excitement than true aggression. Once he settles in and feels safe, he becomes extremely affectionate and loving. He is very people-oriented and clearly bonds deeply with his humans. Despite his confident voice, there is also a slightly sensitive and unsure side to him. Around a much larger male Husky in his previous home, Itachi reportedly immediately rolled over submissively rather than escalating conflict. Training and Behavior Itachi is crate trained and house trained overall. Like many intelligent primitive breeds, he thrives most when structure is consistent and expectations are clear. He is also highly prey driven. Potential adopters need to understand that prey drive is not something dogs simply “grow out of.” His owner disclosed that he previously killed chickens after gaining access to their enclosure. Because of this, he should not be placed in homes with small livestock or unsecured small animals. He has also shown possessiveness around food and toys and should always be fed separately from other dogs. Other Animals Itachi has successfully lived with cats and other dogs in the home. However, his owner recommends more caution with unfamiliar animals, especially male dogs, and believes proper introductions and management are important. While he has not shown severe male aggression in the situations described, he can become reactive or possessive in situations involving food, toys, or overstimulation. A thoughtful adopter who understands dog behavior and respects boundaries will be important for his success. Daily Life With Itachi Itachi has spent most of his life living as an indoor companion. Before major life changes affected the household, he regularly slept in bed with his owner and spent much of the day free roaming inside the home. He is not a dog that wants to emotionally exist on the sidelines. He wants involvement. He wants communication. He wants to feel connected to his people. His vocal nature and expressive personality mean he will likely do best in a home that appreciates the hilarious, dramatic, opinionated side of Shibas instead of expecting a silent robot dog. Home Environment Itachi would likely do best in: A home familiar with Shiba Inu behavior A home comfortable managing prey drive and resource guarding tendencies A calmer household without chaos or constant overstimulation People willing to do thoughtful introductions with new animals A home that values structure, enrichment, and engagement Because he is vocal, he may not be ideal for apartments with extremely noise-sensitive neighbors. The Right Home for Itachi Dogs like Itachi are often misunderstood. People see vocalization, intensity, sensitivity, or possessiveness and immediately assume dominance or aggression when, in reality, many primitive breeds are simply emotionally expressive and environmentally aware. Itachi is not a dog that needs to be dominated. He needs trust. He needs consistency. He needs people who understand that intelligent dogs are not emotionally simple. In the right environment, Itachi has the potential to become an incredibly bonded, loyal, entertaining companion with a huge personality and a lot of love to give.
