Meet Lychee !! *UPDATED* He is one of the now 23 dogs we’ve taken in from a horrible hoarding situation. He survived being in a feces covered home during freezing temps with no heat, no water, no food and no electricity for a very long time. The dogs there all had to fight over very little food and resources. He’s still very scared but he’s getting there! Lychee is approx 3 years old. He is a male Yorkie mix best guess. He weighs approx 20 Pounds and is full grown. He is already neutered, up to date on vaccines and microchipped. He is heartworm negative and on monthly preventions. This guy was the last in the house to be caught and he arrived to us extremely shut down. The good thing about him is even when he is terrified he never tries to bite. He has really had some big breakthroughs lately and we are so proud of him!! He just needs a family willing to listen to his needs and accommodate him while he adjusts to their home. He has done really well with other dogs of all sizes. He is just starting to play a bit but otherwise just happily coexists. He is fostered with cats and does good around them. He ignores the cats and doesn't seem to have any interest in them at all. He has not been fostered with kids. He is not a mean or aggressive dog so we think he could do well with kids that can give him space to get used to them first. Lychee is working on his training but he still needs a lot of help with it. He is currently excelling at it but it takes some accommodating to find out what works for him in your home. He has done good on car rides and does not get sick. He had clearly never been on a leash before and was very terrified of it. He has started to accept it more and is learning. He is crate trained but does better with having a room to stay in instead. He can be crated and is quiet, he just gets scared and will potty on himself in there which he does not do when he's out in a room. He is really starting to understand potty training. He came from a place where they were trapped inside and had no options for going anywhere else so he’s overcome a lot. Currently he has the kitchen as his space and he will use the potty pads well. He has just recently started choosing to not use the pads and go potty outside! We are so excited. It will likely take some time and trial and error in a new place for him to feel safe enough to potty outside but he’s shown us that he can and will choose outside once he feels safe. Lychee really needs a fenced yard or secure pen area that’s attached to a door on the home. He does best when he can follow you inside and outside to potty instead of using a leash or being carried. It takes a lot of the fear away and makes him more comfortable. The key to unlocking his social side is to remove his hiding places. He will choose to hide both inside or out if he can. When these areas are blocked off he settles in and starts to open up. He will look for a place to hide then quickly give up and rest in his dog bed or come up on the couch for cuddles. Lychee was in a situation where he had to fight over limited food and resources from the other dogs in the home. So far he’s shown no issues with sharing food with people or pets. He has shared toys and food around other dogs without issue and takes treats beside other dogs politely. We still suggest allowing him to eat separately where he can take his time and not feel threatened or pressured. He likes cheese and treats and takes things from you very gently. He has a low energy level so far. He pretty much finds a spot and stays there. Once trust is built he likes to cuddle and will climb up on you to give you kisses. He likes you to pet him the entire time you are cuddling or he will leave and go sleep somewhere else LOL. He has no issues being alone all day while you are at work and requires little exercise. We have seen some spunky moments from him and do expect he may get a little more energetic once he fully decompresses. Overall Lychee is a scruffy and adorable little guy. He really has so much potential. These dogs from this situation have shown us that with time they will break through the fear and start to trust again. So many have been adopted and are now thriving. If you are willing to help him work through his remaining training needs, you will get one amazing little guy. He has such a loving and sweet side to him. ***Do not apply to adopt one of these hoarding case dogs if you’re not serious about giving them time to adjust. It’s absolutely unfair to expect them to adjust in a day or two. We’ve already had 3 of them adopted and returned within 24 hours of adoption for not being immediately settled and perfect in a completely new place. All returned for things we explained upfront about them. It’s completely unreasonable and unrealistic to expect that from dogs that have been through what they have. The last thing they need is to be shuffled around due to adopters not listening or being serious about their needs*** Vet and home checks required. Located in Hampton VA. (He will need to be adopted within a 2 hour drive radius) ‼️Please message us directly with questions or to get an application.‼️ For more pics and faster response visit our facebook page
