This big ol boy is straight out of a storybook. He wants to leap through fields, crash into mud puddles, chase anything you throw, and just live life wide open. He is one of the goofiest dogs I have ever met. And somehow, despite the chaos, he is shockingly agile. I swear half the time it looks like his eyes are not even open when he is running, and yet he never misses a step. I keep waiting for him to take me out as he freight trains across the yard. But he always manages to dodge me at the last second like he planned it all along. He takes protecting the girls very seriously. He always knows where they are. Always. He also takes getting bossed around by them just as seriously. One side eye from either of them and he is instantly on his back, apologizing for something he definitely does not understand. If you want to play, he is your best friend. If you want to sit and relax, he will be right there too. Calm, steady, just happy to be near you. He just wants to be with you. To protect you. To love you. He did not ask to become the protector of two dogs and a litter of puppies. But when they were dumped, that is exactly who he became. And somehow, he never lost faith in people. The first time I called out to him, whistling and telling him he was a good boy, his face broke me. He came toward me slowly. Tail tucked but wagging. Ears pinned so far back he looked like a seal. Quiet little whimpers. Like he was saying, "Please... I want to love you. Just do not hurt me." I cannot imagine anyone looking at this gentle giant and choosing anything other than kindness.
