Chicago winters are brutal for Chihuahuas. Below 20°F, outdoor time must be limited to brief potty breaks with full winter gear: insulated coat, booties, and potentially a snood for ear protection. Road salt is toxic if licked from paws, so wipe thoroughly after every outing.

Spring

32°F to 72°F

Mar – May

Chihuahuas gradually emerge from winter hibernation mode as Chicago warms. March still requires a jacket, but by May they can enjoy neighborhood walks comfortably. Their small size means they tire easily, so keep outings moderate in length.

Summer

63°F to 85°F

Jun – Aug

Chicago summers are actually comfortable for Chihuahuas since they tolerate heat well. Their proximity to the ground means hot pavement is a bigger risk than the air temperature itself. Walk on grass when possible and avoid midday concrete. Carry water on humid days.
