Gus
AvailableGus is a small, adult male Dachshund, currently located in Sioux Falls, SD. At six years old and 15 pounds, he’s neutered and his vaccinations are up to date. Gus has special needs related to heartworm treatment, and he’s happiest in an environment without children. He gets along well with other dogs and is hoping to find a confident caretaker to guide him on his continued journey.
About Gus
Gus has spent seven months in foster care, collecting stories as the reigning king of chaos and cuddles. He’s a six-year-old dachshund, weighing in at 15 pounds, with a knack for snuggling and the determination to destroy every plush toy in his domain. Days find him shepherding other dogs—mentor, sparring partner, nap buddy—and at meet-and-greets, he’s the essence of charm, polite and well-mannered. Gus thrives with confident humans who know how to set boundaries, and really comes alive when paired with another dog who can join his daily adventures (and share a few snacks). He’s loyal to the core, sometimes protectively so, and needs an owner who isn’t a ‘maybe’ but an absolute ‘yes’ to leadership and love. Gus is still learning to be a house pet after coming in as a breeder release, and his journey is ongoing: he recently tested heartworm positive and will remain with his foster while receiving treatment. He’s not looking for a home with children. Gus is a spirited, loving companion with a big heart, all wrapped up in a long, low package that’s impossible to ignore. Ready to meet your new best friend? Questions about Gus
What type of living environment is this breed usually best suited for?
Gus, as a Dachshund, is happiest in a loving home environment with moderate space and daily human interaction. He enjoys company—ideally with another friendly dog—and needs someone who offers both companionship and consistent leadership.
How much outdoor space does this breed typically need?
Gus and other Dachshunds don’t require a large yard but do benefit from regular outdoor walks and playtime. A secure, fenced yard or daily neighborhood strolls would keep Gus satisfied and stimulated.
Is this breed typically suitable for homes with children?
Gus prefers a home without children, as adult-only environments suit him best. Generally, dachshunds can be good with respectful older kids, but Gus thrives where things stay calm and routines are clear.
