About Champ Sussex Hoarding Survivor

The public may have moved on from the Sussex County hoarding case, but dogs like Champ Sussex Hoarding Survivor are still learning to heal from years of neglect. Champ just joined rescue after being one of the last dogs trapped from the property. He's a small, black and tan chihuahua/miniature pinscher/Jack Russell mix (best guess), weighing about 12 lbs and roughly 2-3 years old. Thanks to his time at Happy Tails Inn, Champ is starting to explore play and knows the comfort of a favorite squeaky toy, but he's still shy and figuring out how to trust people. He startles easy, hasn't been on a leash, and doesn't yet know how to seek attention. Once held, though, he shows signs he wants to connect, leaning in for gentle affection. Champ feels safest around other dogs—he needs a home with a calm, friendly pack and a patient adult committed to helping him build confidence. He is a flight risk due to his fear, so extra caution is necessary to keep him secure. House training isn't quite there yet, so further work will be needed. Medically, Champ is neutered and up to date on shots. Watching him slowly discover comfort and happiness is both rewarding and humbling for those helping him adjust.
