About Sage
** If you are interested in adopting Sage, please fill out our adoption application at http://farfels.com/farfels-rescue/adoption-form/ ** Meet Sage! Sage is a darling, 9 year old, 15 lb purebred Dachshund. Sage is super happy, bouncy, playful, friendly, and sweet! Sage’s journey brought him to us from a shelter in New Mexico, where he found himself through no fault of his own. Even in a crowded shelter environment where he had to share a kennel with another dog due to space, Sage showed just how adaptable and kind he is. He got along well with his kennel mate (another small dog) and continues to be a friendly, social little guy who truly enjoys the company of both people and other dogs. He was so loved by the shelter staff that they brought him to hang out in their office every day! One of the first things everyone notices about Sage is just how incredibly silly he is. And don’t let his age fool you - this little guy is full of life! Sage is extremely playful and absolutely LOVES toys. He will happily entertain himself (and you!) by playing and tearing them up with pure joy. He also loves going for walks and has a fun, spunky personality that makes him such a joy to be around. We do want to note that Sage does not want to share his toys with other dogs. He gets along great with other dogs in general, just prefers his toys to be his and his alone! Sage is blind, but so adaptable. He uses his other senses to get around confidently and quickly learns the layout of his environment. Once he’s familiar with his home, he moves around with ease and just wants to be included in whatever you’re doing. Sage also has a large scar along his back that you may have noticed in his photos. This has been examined by our vet and is confirmed to be fully healed scar tissue (not hair loss or an active skin condition). Based on its appearance, it looks like it may have been caused by a burn or possibly a past reaction to a topical treatment many years ago. Whatever the cause, it is long since healed. It’s simply part of Sage’s story now and doesn’t impact his comfort, health, or happy, playful nature in any way. Sage has a Grade 5-6 heart murmur, and we want to be as transparent as possible about what that could mean. Heart murmurs are graded on a scale from 1 to 6, with 6 being the most pronounced. While the grade reflects how loud the murmur is (not necessarily how a dog feels day to day), a higher grade can sometimes be associated with more advanced heart disease. At this time, Sage is not showing symptoms that require medication or special care, and he is currently living his life like a completely normal, happy, PLAYFUL dog. However, because of the high grade of his murmur, it is possible that Sage may have a shorter lifespan than a typical dog. It’s also important to say that we do not know this for sure!!! Some dogs with higher grade murmurs continue to do well for years without needing intervention. What we can say with certainty is that Sage does NOT act like a senior dog in any way (other than being blind). He is playful, energetic, and full of personality. He is living in the moment, and he is enjoying life to the absolute fullest. Sage is truly a special little dog. He’s resilient, loving, and full of life. He’s looking for a compassionate, loving home with someone who understands his medical unknowns but is ready to embrace all the joy, laughter, and love he brings every single day. Sage is fully vaccinated and microchipped. He is not yet neutered, due to the risk of putting him under anesthesia with a heart murmur. Our vet agrees that neutering him is not worth the risk, so Sage has a medical exemption to not be neutered for his safety. We also want to note that unfortunately Sage cannot receive a dental cleaning due to the risk of putting him under anesthesia. Applications are currently being accepted for our wonderful pup. If interested in this gorgeous, very cuddly/sweet and loving best friend, please fill out an application completely at http://farfels.com/farfels-rescue/adoption-form/ and submit. **PLEASE NOTE** If you're truly interested in adopting from us, please be sure to fill out our Farfel's Rescue adoption application found at the link above or at farfels.com. Adoption site applications such as Petfinder and Adoptapet don't provide enough information and therefore aren't useful. Our Farfel's application is the only initial tool that we have to determine a great match for this very deserving dog. We're sorry, but in many cases, we're unable to get back to those that don't submit our Farfel's Rescue adoption application. Thanks very much for choosing rescue.
