Coming soonMeet Dug (Doug) My full name is Jimmy Dugan the goofy Tom Hanks Character in A League of Their Own. I do live life fully each day and I do make my foster mom smile often. Dug is a 1 yr old, neutered Border Collie, UTD on all vaccines and on Heartworm, Flea Tick preventative. He has a loving, joyful, goofy spirit. He approaches life with enthusiasm and curiosity. While he can have a sensitive wary side when introduced to new people and situations, he always wants to do the right thing but needs help learning how. He did not get the chance to learn as a puppy. Since coming into rescue, a village has helped him make his way. What has he learned? How wonderful life is with human and canine friends. How to run and play in his own 4 ft fenced backyard. He has no desire to leave it. Loves his dog door. He has a great off switch, loves to walk then cuddle and watch movies! He respects a house so while curious he does not take things that don't belong to him and if he chooses unwisely, a simple no and a show of what he can have will do. He is fully house trained and stands quietly at the door to signal “got to go”. He eats and sleeps in a crate (he would love to sleep by your bed) without fuss. He is slowly learning that staying in a crate while his human is gone is ok, she will return. He loves benebones, toys and playing tug with his favorite foster sibling. His obedience skills are coming along nicely. He is a dry sponge absorbing it all and surprises his foster mom every day. He walks nicely 1:1on a short leash. Does well on a long leash, but must be reminded to not pull when things are exciting, and he wants to join in. His sit hold is becoming more automatic. He waits when told at gates and doors. He respects child gates. Lays on command and is learning so much more. Not bad for a dog who knew nothing 2 months ago. He currently lives with 4 confident dogs, both young and old, large, and small. He can have an intense herding stare and will jump into any game playing action but will accept correction from dogs if he’s too enthusiastic. What does Dug need? A calm, confident, kind human all his own who helps him gain confidence in new situations and will continue his training to learn all the things he didn't get a chance to as a puppy. He is smart, eager, and does not want to disappoint you. Because he is shy and wary at times, and just gaining experience & confidence, young children are not a good match. He has natural herding abilities and has not been coached on how to use them appropriately, so livestock, birds and cats are not a good fit. He has so many other things he is trying to master. He needs and wants a fenced yard at least 4 ft to play in. He is without a doubt loving, devoted and obedient. He is being fostered in SW Michigan 90 min from Chicago.
