About Rupert

Meet Rupert. Rupert is a 2-year-old, 25-pound dachshund mix with the most beautiful brindle-and-white coat — almost tiger-striped with a cookies-and-cream look that makes him absolutely unforgettable. He may not look the most like a classic dachshund, but he definitely has that dachshund personality: bouncy, funny, social, and very ready to claim a lap when playtime is over. Rupert came from the heartbreaking hoarding case involving 36 dogs living in horrible conditions. He was one of the last two dogs pulled and even spent a little time in a shelter after being removed from the RV they were living in. For such a young dog to have already been through so much, Rupert has held onto his sweet, outgoing spirit in a way that is truly special. He is a very social little guy who wants to meet everyone. Rupert is especially good with kids, teens, and women. He is a little cautious with men at first, but he is learning they are not so scary after all. With each day, he continues to gain confidence. Rupert is also wonderful with other dogs and does well with everyone from a 66-pound pit bull to tiny 16-week-old puppies. He loves to play, but he is just as happy curling up in a lap or on a comfy blanket on the couch. He really is that perfect mix of playful and affectionate — an easygoing little lap goblin with just the right amount of bounce. He does well eating in a group on Purina dog food and is neutered, up to date on vaccines, and on prevention. He is good in a crate both at night and during the day as needed. He may complain a little at first, but he settles down. He is not especially fond of being alone, and honestly, after the life he has had, that is easy to understand. Rupert has also had a brief introduction to cats. He sniffed them curiously, then quickly lost interest when they made it clear they were not thrilled about sharing their space. He was respectful and moved on. He walks well on a leash, though in true little-dog fashion, if something scares him, he will hit the ground and freeze. It is one of those small reminders that even the happiest, most social dogs from hard situations are still learning that the world is safe now. Rupert is one of those dogs who makes you smile. He has been through neglect, instability, and fear, yet he still greets life with curiosity, affection, and hope. Beneath his adorable looks and silly little dachshund ways is a dog who simply wants love, comfort, and a family of his own. Rupert is ready to leave his past behind and be someone's beloved little sidekick. Please fill out an adoption application. His $450 adoption fee covers medical care up to adoption to include vaccines, neuter, microchip, foster care and transportation from Louisiana to NY.
