About Gregor

Meet Gregor. Gregor is a 4-year-old, 17-pound black and white dachshund mix with a sweet soul, a funny little bounce, and so much love to give. He has a bit of a hound look to him, but make no mistake — he acts just like a dachshund in all the best ways: playful, easygoing, affectionate, and happiest when he is curled up in a lap soaking up love. Gregor came from the heartbreaking hoarding case involving 36 dogs living in horrible conditions. He was also one of the last two dogs pulled from that situation, which meant he spent even more time in uncertainty before finally making it to safety, including some extra time in the shelter after being removed. Knowing that makes his sweetness and resilience even more remarkable. Like so many from that situation, Gregor arrived needing both physical and emotional healing. He still has some weight to gain, and his skin issues are being treated. He is missing some hair right now, but it already looks like it is starting to grow back in. Even in this stage of recovery, Gregor is beautiful — and his resilience shines brighter than anything else. He is such a sweetheart. Gregor plays easily with every dog he meets, from a 66-pound blue pit bull to tiny 16-week-old puppies. He loves to play, but he also loves to lounge on the couch or, better yet, in your lap. He has not shown one ounce of aggression — only gratitude for being safe, fed, and cared for. It is impossible not to be moved by how much love he still has to give after everything he has been through. He does well eating in a group on Purina dog food and is good with kids, teens, and women. He is still learning that men are safe too. He can be a little wary of them at first, but it is clearly fear, not anything else, and he is already making progress. Gregor is clean in his crate at night and during the day when needed. He may complain a little about being crated, but he settles. He also has some separation anxiety, which is understandable given his past. After surviving neglect, instability, and spending extra time in the shelter, it makes sense that he wants to stay close to the people who make him feel safe. He is doing well with a short fence and on a leash. If something scares him, he will hit the ground and freeze, but with calm encouragement he recovers quickly. That says so much about who Gregor is — even when he is afraid, he is trying. He wants so badly to trust. He wants so badly to be loved. He has also met cats. He tried to sniff them, and when they hissed at him, he immediately whined to be picked up and placed in a lap. He was more frightened than anything, and his reaction was pure softness. Gregor is neutered, up to date on all vaccines, and on prevention. With patience, kindness, and a little time, he is going to make an amazing companion. Truthfully, he already is. The fact that he is this loving, this gentle, and this resilient so soon after everything he has survived says everything about what a special dog he is. Gregor wants to be loved so badly, and he has so much love to give in return. He is safe now. He is healing now. Now he just needs someone to choose him forever. Please fill out an adoption application to have him join your family. His $350 adoption fee covers medical care up to adoption to include vaccines, neuter, microchip, foster care and transportation from Louisiana to NY.
