This 6–7 year old Maltipoo weighs just 9.8 pounds and was rescued from the shelter alongside his friend Rosebud. They came in quite matted and in need of care, so both are currently sporting short “summer cuts.” Bonsai is a happy, resilient little dog who is clearly ready to enjoy the comforts of home. Daily Routine & Lifestyle Bonsai has settled nicely into foster life and has shown that he’s flexible and easygoing. He sleeps quietly in his crate at night and waits patiently until his person wakes up. Once the day begins, he heads outside to the backyard for his first potty break, followed by his favorite activity — a walk. His first walk of the day is typically the longest, lasting 30 minutes to an hour, and he truly enjoys getting out to explore and meet other dogs and people. He usually gets about four walks per day, with the later outings lasting 15–30 minutes depending on weather and schedules. He also has access to a backyard, where he enjoys sniffing around, especially if someone is outside with him. He is currently free-fed, meaning he eats when he feels hungry. At bedtime, he heads out for one last walk and then settles into his crate for the night. One especially endearing habit he’s picked up is expecting to be carried to bed along with the resident dog — once placed down, he happily rolls over and settles in. Personality Bonsai is friendly, affectionate, and a pleasure to have around. He enjoys being near his people but is not overly clingy — sometimes he’ll follow you from room to room, and other times he’s content relaxing nearby. He loves belly rubs and has a funny way of asking for them by curling into a sitting position and rolling over, which never fails to make people smile. He can be both relaxed and active depending on the situation. He’s happy lounging on the couch but is also up for outings and adventures. He doesn’t show much interest in toys, but he does get the occasional burst of zoomies. One adorable trait is how expressive he is with his front paws — he’ll gently tap for attention, treats, or affection. He may bark when left alone until he sees his person again, but this had previously improved and may continue to do so with consistency. Social Skills Bonsai gets along well with other dogs and has had positive interactions with several small dogs in social settings. He greets dogs politely on walks and does not react to passing dogs or outside distractions. He may occasionally make a soft, low growling sound, but it does not appear aggressive and is often just part of his quirky communication style. He has also spent time around children and was described as relaxed and comfortable in their presence. Exercise & Training Bonsai walks nicely on leash, does not pull, and shows no interest in chasing squirrels. He has already enjoyed trips to the beach and hikes at local parks, where he kept up well and seemed to enjoy the experience. He is crate trained and appears to be about 98% housetrained, with only a couple of accidents during his first days in foster care and none since. He understands basic commands like “come” and “sit,” and he is very food motivated, which makes training easier. Additional Notes Bonsai is a smart and curious little dog. He has been known to chew through standard leashes and a seatbelt tether, so a sturdy leash is recommended. He is also surprisingly athletic for his size and can jump onto furniture or tables if chairs are left out, especially if food is involved. Why Bonsai Stands Out Bonsai is a cheerful, affectionate companion who adapts easily to new environments and enjoys being part of daily life. Whether he’s heading out for a walk, joining you on an outing, or rolling over for belly rubs, he brings a wonderful mix of sweetness, personality, and companionship in a very small package.
