About Dexter
Dexter is 1 years old and spent the first year of his life living outside, alone, tethered to an igloo. Because of that early trauma, he has significant separation anxiety. When left alone, his cries are rooted in fear—not disobedience. This is not behavior that needs punishment; it’s something that requires understanding, patience, and reassurance. Despite his past, Dexter is an absolute love bug. He is deeply affectionate, highly bonded to his people, and happiest when he’s close. While some believe he should be taught that being alone is “okay,” Dexter would thrive best in a home where someone is present most of the time—especially in a world where remote work is possible. Crates are extremely distressing for Dexter. Being tethered was his entire world for his first year, and confinement triggers intense fear. When crated, he becomes so anxious that he urinates on himself. He has already endured more fear than any dog should, and he deserves gentler alternatives, such as a baby pen if separation is necessary. If Dexter isn’t playing with other dogs, he wants to be cuddling—there is no in-between. He loves being in bed with his people and often sleeps curled up against my pregnant belly. He is high-energy, solid, and strong, and he thinks he is a big dog. He enjoys playing with larger dogs, especially ones who are truly tolerant and respectful of smaller dogs’ boundaries. That said, he does not need to live with big dogs—only that if he does, they must be the right kind. Dexter would thrive in a home with: Someone who works remotely or is home most of the time Someone who wants a dog in their bed Someone seeking a true, constant companion A family committed to continuing his training with patience, consistency, and kindness He loves walks, meeting new people, and being social. Dexter wants to be included in everything and genuinely enjoys life with his humans. Because he lived outdoors for so long, he is still learning indoor potty skills, but he is making excellent progress. He is eager to please and responds beautifully to patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Dexter has done wonderfully with children, cats, and dogs of all sizes.
