Meet Winnie – A Little Dog with a Big Heart 🐾 Winnie is an adorable female Jack Russell Terrier / Bichon / Maltese mix born August 13, 2025, and currently weighing about 15 pounds. This sweet little gal may be small, but her personality is absolutely A+. Before coming to Prairie Paws Rescue, Winnie unfortunately experienced a fall from a deck that injured her front right leg. Her previous owners attempted to splint the leg rather than pursue veterinary treatment, and the injury did not heal properly. When Winnie arrived in foster care, her foster family noticed she would limp, favor the leg, and sometimes hold it up. Prairie Paws Rescue took Winnie to the veterinarian for X-rays, which revealed a dislocation in the elbow area. She was then evaluated by an orthopedic specialist—who happened to be the same veterinarian who had originally seen her when the injury occurred. After a thorough examination and watching Winnie walk, the specialist determined that reconstructive surgery is no longer an option, and thankfully amputation is not necessary either. Winnie will do well with range-of-motion exercises and a low-dose pain medication to keep her comfortable. Now let’s talk about what really matters—Winnie’s wonderful personality! Winnie is a fun-loving, bubbly little dog who enjoys life to the fullest. She gets along great with dogs her size in her foster home and loves running around the backyard with them. Tug-of-war, chasing a ball, and playful zoomies are some of her favorite activities. And when playtime is over, Winnie is more than happy to curl up beside you for some cuddle time. Speaking of snuggling—Winnie’s favorite place to sleep is right next to her people in bed. She loves being close to her humans and would thrive in a home where she can be part of the family. ***One thing to note: Winnie is NOT a fan of kennels and will let you know by howling if she’s confined. Winnie truly is a sweet, affectionate companion with a joyful spirit. Her little leg doesn’t slow her down or dampen her love for life.
