About Cody
Cody’s early life as a breeder dog left him wary of new experiences, but with patience, he’s begun to trust and seek attention from the person who has spent time earning it. Now about three and a half years old and thirteen pounds, this small Shih Tzu/Maltese mix is searching for an adopter with dog experience, a secure fenced yard, and another small, playful dog for companionship and leadership. Cody isn’t comfortable with children or loud, busy households; sudden movements and unfamiliar voices can set him back. He prefers a calm routine and needs someone at home most of the time who will let him approach on his terms. Inside, Cody is coming along with house training—he uses a doggie door and will go outside in colder weather for a short time, but a schedule and the option for a potty pad are best. Outdoors, he’s happiest running in the yard with other dogs; he doesn’t have a strong recall, so being able to keep him secure is important. Cody eats dry food soaked in water and has a habit of watching for strangers while he eats. He handles car rides in a crate, and while walks are still unfamiliar, he loves a yard where he can play freely. Grooming is needed every few months to keep his coat tidy, and he’d do best in a quiet, single-family home where his loud bark won’t be a problem. Cody is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and his microchip is registered. He continues to make slow, steady progress, but he’ll need a patient adopter ready to invest in his adjustment. Questions about Cody
What type of living environment is this breed usually best suited for?
Cody, as a Shih Tzu/Maltese mix, does best in a quiet home with a predictable routine. Apartment life can work, but a single-family home with a yard suits his personality—especially given his tendency to bark and preference for outdoor play.
How much outdoor space does this breed typically need?
Shih Tzu/Maltese mixes like Cody are small and don’t require a lot of space, but having a private, secure fenced yard where he can safely run and play with other dogs is a big plus for his happiness.
Is this breed typically suitable for homes with children?
Cody is not a good fit for families with children. Shih Tzu/Maltese mixes can be gentle, but Cody is fearful of noise and fast movement, so an adult-only home is best.
