About Coco

Meet Coco ACCT-A-243917! Coco is a fun wiggly little gal who was surrendered by her owner of 11 years. Understandably confused in the shelter, Coco has struggled with kennel life, sometimes growling or snapping when strangers come near her kennel. Once Coco gets out of kennel and feels more safe, she is an absolute blast! She loves to wiggle around, show you her belly for belly rubs, and cuddle right up to you. Coco is truly a sweet girl who will thrive in the comfort of a safe home like the one she has known. She is without a doubt house trained. She's very loving and will seek out affection. She'll get the zoomies then flop on her back and wiggle around for some belly rubs. On 3/6 staff noted: "I went to meet Coco in her kennel. I gave her a treat through the bars of her kennel, she took the treat gently, no growling or stiffness noted. I opened her kennel and leashed her with no issue. She came out with a loose, wiggly body, running and jumping excitedly. I sat down and she jumped in my lap where she allowed hiney scratches and leaned into pets. I took one of her toys out of her kennel to see if she would play and she was not interested in the toy, she just wanted attention from me. When it was time to go back into her kennel, she went in very easily and I had no issues removing her leash. She was a very sweet girl." On 3/5 behavior evaluation: "Kennel Presentation: Laying on her bed when I approached and gave me gentle tail wags. Leash Skills: I very easily leashed her and she slowly got out of her kennel. Definitely an older girl and she moves pretty slowly at first. Sociability: In the play yard she was so playful and super goofy. She loved to do little zoomies and run around with her little legs. She kept showing me her belly and wiggling around on the ground for belly rubs! She took pets from me all over and loved belly rubs! She was very gentle with taking treats and seems very treat motivated. Such a sweet wiggly girl. Play: She loves to chase after toys and fetch them back, even though the tennis balls were a little big for her little tiny body. Dog Interaction: No face to face today, When other dogs and people walked by she was softly barking with a very excited and loose body. Return to Kennel: No issues returning Color Level: Gave her gold - very easy for handling but there was a note about resource guarding so bumping to gold, but can be bumped down if she continues to have positive notes. On 3/3 staff noted: "Offered to bring Coco out for follow up vet exam, as I helped with her initial vet exam & she's familiar with me. Went up to her kennel & she was at the front laying down with soft eyes & a low wagging tail. Leashed her easily, a little nervous with leash overhead but no other issues. Held leash short & scooped her up from overtop, she started panicking with being picked up (thrashing, crying out) & jumped out of my arms about a foot from the ground. I sat on the ground & talked softly to her, she cowered for a few seconds then crawled into my lap & let me pet her head/face. Walked to exam room no issues. In exam room, she stayed by my side, either against my legs or in my lap. She would occasionally cuddle up in my arms and give me kisses on the neck/chin and would solicits pets to her head/face. She sniffed the vet's hand but didn't venture further initially. Allowed me to look at her ears, eyes, and mouth with no issues. Turns quickly when touching her back/hind-end. Explored the room a bit and went to the bathroom three times, two urine & one feces. After a few mins, warmed up to the vet and allowed her to examine her & listen to her heart/lungs. Still remained nervous about her back/hind-end, always alert to anyone behind her or reaching behind her & would whip around. At one point, she backed up into my arm & panicked, turned around, and snapped at my arm twice. Made contact with bare skin with no injury or mark, seemed like a fearful warning. It seems like Coco does not like to be picked up at all. Returned to kennel. Instead of returning her to top kennel she was moved to, switched her back to a bottom kennel & she entered with no issues. Let me unloop the leash and move her things to her new kennel." On 3/2 staff noted: During my morning walk through there was a hand written sign on Coco's kennel saying "resource guards". I asked the ACA who did feeding yesterday and he said when he slipped the bowl into her kennel Coco hovered over the bowl, hackles raised, low growling and air snapped. On 2/27 staff noted: *likes string cheese* Was low growling when I entered the room with low tail wagging and tight muzzle. I threw in some string cheese through the bars, she stopped growling. Kept feeding through the bars as she became more comfortable. I slowly opened the kennel door with some re-encouragement baby talk. She air snapped when I tried to feed her directly so I dropped down the cheese and leashed her with the loop. She came out easily through the kennel. I dropped and open hand out, she air snapped again. Took her out for a potty break before bringing her in meet and greet room. She did her business but did not let me close enough to pet. She gave a warning bark in the meet and greet room to which I had ended the meet to not further stress coco out. She was easy to return to kennel, had to bribe with cheese but went right in, removed loop with hook and she was settled with her treats. On 2/26 surrender notes: "Had Coco for 11 years. Surrendering due to moving. Live with 1 adult and 1 cat. Fully housebroken and crate trained. Medium energy, enjoys some activity. Walks well on a leash and knows sit and roll over. She has never been to a vet. She is not used to strangers but is good with dogs, cats and children." ACCT Philly is located at 111 West Hunting Park Ave in Philadelphia.
