About Goober

Meet Goober. Goober is a 9-year-old Pit Bull mix weighing about 60 pounds who is currently living at our shelter in Pembroke, Massachusetts. He is a lower-energy dog who enjoys calm companionship, soft places to rest, and simply being near his people. Goober was seized in a cruelty case in South Carolina in February 2025 after years of severe neglect. When he was rescued, he was severely underweight, covered in fleas, suffering from significant skin damage, and tested high heartworm positive. Despite everything he endured, Goober remained incredibly affectionate and people-oriented. He loves connection and simply wants to be close to his person. Because of the neglect he survived, Goober does have ongoing medical needs that adopters must be prepared to manage. Current medical needs include: • Chronic environmental allergies (managed with medication) • Urinary incontinence requiring daily medication • Heart disease related to long-term untreated heartworms • History of pneumonia, urinary tract infection, and ear infections • Gastric debris in the stomach that cannot be surgically removed due to anesthesia risk • Prescription diet His current medications cost approximately $171.80 per month, not including routine veterinary care. Goober is house trained and crate trained, though his incontinence means accidents can occur. He can live with other dogs with thoughtful management and supervision. In a previous foster home, he guarded trash and high-value food items from other dogs, so structured feeding and preventing access to food and trash will be important. Goober would do best in a calm home. Children in the home must be at least 16 years old. Goober’s adoption fee has been waived to help him find the right home. He does not need an active lifestyle. What he needs most is stability, patience, and someone willing to continue the medical care that keeps him comfortable. Goober has endured far more than any dog should. What he deserves now is a safe home and a soft place to land for the rest of his life. All of our dogs are up to date on vaccinations, spayed/neutered, microchipped, and on preventatives.
