He earned his name because as a puppy he followed his older brother everywhere, always wanting to be involved in whatever was happening. Shadow is very smart and highly food motivated, which makes him eager to learn. He knows sit, speak, paw, whisper, and stay (though he is still working on consistency), and he understands both “no” and “gentle.” He enjoys training and responds well to positive reinforcement. He does get excited about treats and benefits from gentle reminders to take them softly. He will also need continued leash training, as he is still learning confidence and manners on walks. He is fully house-trained but is a sensitive dog who thrives on reassurance. He prefers having his person nearby when going outside and even feels more comfortable eating when someone is close. Shadow does struggle with separation anxiety, and stress has caused some hair loss around his ears. He is not a dog who does well being left alone for long periods without support. A patient, calm, and present owner who can provide routine and reassurance will help him feel secure and thrive. He has been around a neighbor’s child and, with proper introductions, has been gentle and affectionate. He currently lives with cats and can coexist with them, although he occasionally enjoys chasing them in play. He has shown resource guarding behaviors around food and toys toward his older brother, so careful management and structure are important. Because of his sensitivity and anxiety, a calm home environment would be best. Shadow would thrive in a home with a secure yard where he can run and release energy. He needs someone who understands that he bonds deeply and is willing to continue guiding him with patience and consistency.
