About Butters

Butters, a four-year-old neutered male shepherd mix, has a history that would leave anyone cautious—he spent his first year in a cage at a desert hoarding site and was one of 75 dogs rescued from terrible conditions. Abandoned later for two years by a previous rescue, Butters could easily have given up. Instead, he’s started to warm to people and life in general, albeit on his own shy, slow terms. Early on, he'll keep his distance and take time to trust; that's just the result of what life handed him. If given the space to open up though, he reveals an oversized puppy spirit that loves everything from chasing balls to paddling in pools to plenty of butt scratches. Training with Butters has focused on building his confidence, not compliance—helping him feel safe enough to engage and play is the real work. He’ll linger at first with toys, testing them with his nose and one hopeful squeak, before sending them airborne. Around other dogs his energy and playfulness really come alive, and patient, understanding humans bring out more of his goofy side every day. He’s best matched with adopters who know patience and a house with active, dog-savvy playmates. He needs time, love, and training—especially crate and potty basics—but with the right fit, this big-hearted dog is set to thrive. Give him the start he deserves.
