About Cooper

Start your journey together! Apply now. Meet Cooper! He is a 3-year-old purebred yellow Labrador Retriever, weighing around 90 pounds and currently located in Massachusetts. Cooper was brought in with the hope of understanding and helping him work through his behavioral triggers, so he can finally find the forever home he truly deserves. Cooper is a large, handsome American yellow Lab. He is exceptional at the vet and during grooming, such as nail trims and baths. Incredibly smart and perceptive, Cooper senses your emotions and intentions more than most dogs, so he truly keeps you honest. After years of training experience, it’s clear that Cooper is uniquely tuned in to people. There are signs Cooper experienced abuse as a young dog, leading to some reactivity around his crate and resource-guarding with food and high-value treats. For the past seven months, with a professional trainer, he has made visible progress in both areas, and he continues to improve every day. To thrive, Cooper will need an adopter who can provide structure, patience, and a calm, confident presence. Cooper’s ideal home would be with a trainer, an experienced handler, or someone seeking a physical fitness buddy. He especially enjoys scent work and is a quick learner with a great nose. Food-driven and clever, he is always eager to learn, though he will opportunistically counter-surf if left unsupervised! While he guards his food, he happily accepts treats from your hand, showing no aggression. Cooper loves other dogs, enjoying rough-and-tumble play, hiking, and walks. He is submissive with strong, confident dogs and has been exposed to hundreds of dogs during his training without issue. Outside his crate and without food involved, Cooper is sweet-natured and affectionate. As he learns to trust, his reactivity lessens, but he will always require a consistent and confident handler willing to maintain boundaries and structure. This special dog is not suited for a novice or inexperienced adopter; he needs someone who understands reactive behavior, can meet with him multiple times, and is committed to setting him up for lifelong success. The right companion will be rewarded with an endlessly interesting, eager, and loving dog. Please consider Cooper if you are an experienced, qualified adopter able to give him the safe, structured home he deserves. They are waiting with paws crossed! Apply now!
