Tom is the biggest of the three Great Pyrenees mix puppies who were abandoned in the Ellis / Alma area, fed by a good Samaritan, and kept in a shady spot in her yard with a large crate and a kiddie pool while the Texas heat did not let up. He came out of that gentle, and shy at first, like his brothers — and then, once he opens up, he jumps. Literally. He is the jumper of the three, the one who cannot quite contain himself when he decides you are safe. Tom loves to swim. He follows his foster around during chores, as if helping is a job he has applied for and intends to keep. He is treat motivated and a cuddle bug, good around children ages 2 and 5, and like his brothers he does not like being completely alone — he will bark for a few minutes when left, and he startles at quick movements, swinging, and loud sounds. He does not get aggressive. He runs. That is fear, not temper, and it is already softening with patience and routine. Tom does resource-guard sometimes. It is manageable, and it calms with a steady voice and a simple phrase his foster uses — "Tom be nice" — but whoever adopts him should know it, work with it honestly, and not be surprised by it. He is not a difficult dog. He is a big, gentle puppy who had a hard start and is learning, fast, what a real home feels like. He has been neutered, and he did really well after surgery. He is kennel trained — no accidents when kenneled — and he is used to getting a biscuit when he is put up. He is learning sit and lay, and he is still learning the leash: put one on him and he tends to hit the ground, so his adopter should expect a patient start to walks, not a finished walker. Picture this: Tom, wet from the pool, following you back toward the house, not because you called him, but because that is where you are going, and that is where he wants to be. Good to know: Great Pyrenees mix puppy, the largest of the Tom / Sawyer / Tex trio, fostered with his brothers. Neutered, kennel trained with no accidents when kenneled, accustomed to a biscuit when put up, learning sit and lay, still learning the leash. Gentle and shy at first, treat motivated, cuddle bug, loves to swim, follows during chores, good around young children. Barks briefly when left, dislikes being completely alone, startles at quick movements and loud sounds, runs rather than showing aggression. Resource-guards at times; calms with consistent, gentle correction. Adoption fee $250.
