The Cane Corso is an Italian mastiff that once guarded farms, drove cattle and helped hunt boar in southern Italy. The modern breed was rebuilt from a few survivors in Puglia starting around the 1970s. Adults are large to giant, usually 85 to 120 pounds, with a broad head, a short, stiff coat in black, gray, fawn or red, and a muscular, rectangular frame.
At home many Corsos are calm and devoted, but they're watchful with strangers and can be pushy with other dogs. In Plano, that means planning for socialization on busy trails, steady reward-based training and a secure yard. Many shelter "Corsos" are mixes, so size and behavior vary. Get to know the dog in front of you rather than relying on the label.
