The Maltese is a fine-boned toy dog, usually 4 to 8 pounds, wrapped in a long, silky, single white coat. Small white lap dogs from the Mediterranean show up in ancient writing, but today's breed was largely standardized in Victorian Britain. There's no undercoat and very little shedding, yet the hair grows continuously and tangles fast, so many pet Maltese wear a short puppy cut.
Most Maltese are gentle, affectionate and a little fearless, and many stay playful well into their teens, with a typical lifespan of 12 to 15 years. That makes them a good match for people who are home often. Plan for regular grooming, daily tooth brushing, patient housetraining and a harness instead of a collar. Dogs vary, so a Maltese's own personality counts for more than the breed label.
