The Great Pyrenees began as a livestock guardian in the mountains between France and Spain, where big white dogs stayed with flocks and drove off wolves, bears and thieves. Adults stand 25 to 32 inches tall and typically weigh 85 to 120 pounds, with a weather-resistant double coat that is white or white with gray, tan or reddish-brown markings.
That job explains the personality. Many Pyrs are calm and gentle at home, yet they think for themselves, are slow to follow cues and tend to roam and bark after dark. In Midland, that means a fence that can't be dug under or climbed, patience with training and a vacuum ready for shedding. Pyrs and Pyr mixes turn up often in shelters, and each dog differs in energy and manner.
