Belgian Shepherds come from Belgium, where a mix of herding dogs was sorted into one breed with four coat types in 1891: the long black Groenendael (the AKC's Belgian Sheepdog), the long fawn Tervuren, the short fawn Malinois and the rough-coated Laekenois. They're square, elegant dogs, usually 40 to 75 pounds, with upright ears and a proud head carriage.
Expect a watchful, driven dog that bonds closely with its person. Many are affectionate and playful at home but reserved with strangers, and herding instincts can show up as chasing or nipping. In Houston, the short-coated Malinois type handles the heat more easily than the long-coated varieties, which shed heavily and need more brushing. Every Belgian is different, so watch how a dog actually behaves rather than relying on the label.
