Basset Hounds began as low-slung French trailing hounds that followed rabbit and hare on foot, and British enthusiasts later developed the heavier modern type. Long ears, loose skin and a wrinkled face give them their mournful look, while the short, smooth coat sheds moderately all year. Adults usually weigh 40 to 65 pounds on legs barely a foot tall.
Bassets are mellow and sociable at home, yet stubborn and loud once a smell or boredom takes over. Expect a deep bay, a nose that overrides recall, and a dog that gains weight easily, so a leash, measured meals and a fenced yard all matter. Dogs vary, so spend time with a Basset before deciding what fits your household.
