The American Eskimo Dog has nothing to do with the Arctic. It descends from white German Spitz dogs that immigrants brought to the United States in the early 1900s, and the name changed during World War I. Eskies later became circus performers, and that showmanship still shows in their quick minds and love of tricks. They come in toy, miniature and standard sizes, roughly 6 to 35 pounds.
A dense white double coat, lion-like ruff and plumed tail make Eskies hard to miss, and that coat sheds heavily, especially when it blows once or twice a year. Many are playful and eager to please but reserved with strangers, and they bark readily. In Nashville, expect a dog that wants daily walks, regular brushing and plenty of time with its family.
