The Affenpinscher is a German stable and kitchen ratter whose name means monkey-like terrier, a nod to its bearded, wide-eyed face. It's a sturdy toy dog, roughly 7 to 12 pounds and about 9 to 12 inches tall, with a harsh, wiry coat that forms a mane around the head. Black is the most familiar color, though gray, silver, red and black-and-tan also occur.
Many Affenpinschers are confident, curious and a little comical, and they tend to be loyal to their own people while staying wary of strangers. Some boss around bigger dogs, which is worth remembering at a busy Nashville dog park. Housetraining can take patience, as with many toy breeds. They usually suit adults or families with older children who enjoy a dog with character, and each dog varies in how bold or quiet it turns out.
