The English Shepherd is an American farm dog descended from the collie-type dogs that British and Irish settlers brought over. One dog might move cattle, guard poultry, hunt rats and watch the children, all in the same day. The United Kennel Club has registered the breed since 1927, though the American Kennel Club doesn't recognize it. Adults weigh roughly 40 to 60 pounds and wear a soft, medium-length coat in black and tan, tricolor, black and white, or sable and white.
Many English Shepherds are intelligent, loyal and tuned in to household routines, and they usually want a job and a close partnership with their people. They're often reserved with strangers. With Franklin's rainy springs and plenty of walking parks, plan on daily exercise, thinking games, and regular brushing through seasonal undercoat shedding. Every dog varies, so meet the dog before you decide.
