The American Bulldog descends from working bulldogs that settlers brought to colonial America, where they became all-purpose farm dogs across the South, catching loose cattle and feral hogs and guarding homesteads. The type nearly disappeared after World War II until John D. Johnson and later Alan Scott revived it, producing the heavier Johnson or bully type and the leaner, more athletic Scott or standard type. Most are mostly white, muscular and between 60 and 115 pounds.
Many American Bulldogs are devoted, affectionate family dogs with a confident, protective streak and plenty of stamina. Their strength makes early socialization, consistent reward-based training and secure handling important from the start. Many dogs labeled American Bulldogs in Greenville are mixes, so size, energy and looks can vary quite a bit from dog to dog.
