Coonhound is a family of American scent hounds rather than a single breed. The Black and Tan, Redbone, Bluetick, Treeing Walker, American English and Plott were developed to trail raccoons at night and hold them up a tree. A dog listed as a Coonhound is often one of these or a mix, with a short coat, long ears and a booming bay.
Many are mellow and sociable at home, yet outdoors the nose can override everything, so plan on a leash, a tall solid fence and patient, food-motivated training. Weight runs from about 45 to over 100 pounds, so a dog's build and energy matter more than the label. In Williamsport, every walk is full of new smells, and a hound will happily spend an hour on one block.
